Scanning

We can scan artwork up to A2 size with our professional wide-format Epson 12000XL scanner to produce digital images with exceptional resolution and colour accuracy.

We use a professional Epson 1200 xl flatbed scanner (optical density of 3.8 DMax and 48-bit colour depth) with Silverfast Ai 8 studio software and calibration targets to deliver excellent results in colour accuracy, tone and resolution.

We can scan to A2 and sometimes larger with some skilled and invisible stitching of images. We can also scan at extremely high resolutions to produce enlargements. This can also be very effective for Theatre set production, Audio Visual Presentations and full wallpapered interior designs. We can take an A3 original to over A0 print size at print resolutions of 300 dpi and much larger where resolutions can be lowered (such as theatre sets).

To scan or photograph art works is a bit of a judgement call. Scanning is more automated which makes things a little easier, especially as we have our scanner calibrated and we are experienced in how it will output/represent colour. We have powerful software which we can set to tweak colour and tone with the knowledge that this will capture the art works details and colour accurately.

The scanner has a fixed led light source which does not allow any control, and in some cases, especially when the artwork has shiny areas, the flexibility of our photographic lighting allows us to manage this shine better. It is a similar issue with textured works, where photography offers more control of lighting. Currently, we are also limited further by size when scanning.

Pricing

Scan costs are based on both the input size of the original artwork and the output size of the print required. We can create files to match your original size or with resolutions capable of printing images in metres.

Technology & Craft

The Art and Tools of Photographing Fine Art

Scanning or photographing an original artwork accurately is rarely straightforward. When we look at an original artwork whether 2 or 3 dimensional we have the opportunity to move around and change how the light reflects off an artwork. Differing light sources also change the way we see work and input and output devices use different digital colour spaces.
